At St Ignatius’, we value the vital role that PE plays in supporting every child’s health and wellbeing. We believe that a rich, engaging PE curriculum—enhanced by varied extra‑curricular opportunities—helps to improve pupils’ concentration, attitudes and overall academic achievement.

Intent

Our PE curriculum at St Ignatius’ aims to develop active, confident and healthy pupils who enjoy physical activity and understand its importance. We want all children to build strong fundamental movement skills, experience a wide range of sports, and develop teamwork, resilience and positive attitudes that support lifelong wellbeing.

Implementation

We deliver our PE curriculum through a clear, progressive programme that ensures every child takes part in two hours of high‑quality PE each week. Lessons build from fundamental skills in EYFS and KS1 to sport‑specific skills in KS2. Pupils access competitive opportunities, enrichment clubs, active playtimes and swimming lessons to meet national expectations. Inclusive practice ensures all children, including those with SEND, participate and succeed.

Impact

The impact of PE at St Ignatius’ is seen in pupils who are physically competent, motivated and knowledgeable about healthy lifestyles. Children show progress in movement skills, increased participation in activity, improved fitness and positive attitudes towards teamwork and resilience. By the end of KS2, pupils meet national expectations in PE and swimming and understand how physical activity supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
