Children can access the Language Angels interactive games and videos by downloading the app or accessing the website https://www.languageangels.com/schools/login and using their personal log in.
INTENT: A high-quality languages education should foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. At St. Ignatius, we are committed to ensuring that teaching enables pupils to express themselves in Spanish and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We recognise that competence in another language enables children to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures.
Using the tools and resources that we have access to, our MFL teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, as well as the means to access international opportunities for study and work later in life. The introduction of Spanish in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for further foreign language teaching at KS3.
IMPLEMENTATION: Spanish is currently taught in KS2, in 30 minute lessons, every week.
Each class has a yellow Spanish file, containing vocabulary support for both teachers and children. This is updated when appropriate, by me as the subject leader.
A Spanish lesson at our school will look like this:
-Re-cap of key vocabulary.
-Teach new vocabulary.
-Apply the new words learnt.
-Assess.
The final lesson in each block of learning is used to assess the progress that each child has made over the course of the specified weeks. This will then be used at the end of each term to determine whether a child is “emerging”, “developing” or “secure”. In their current year group.
KS1 are encouraged to introduce Spanish from when teachers feel it is suitable in the school year. In the Summer Term, Year 2 begin to answer the register in Spanish and begin to learn some of the basic vocabulary they will need for Y3 – colours, numbers 1-10, hello, goodbye. (Sticky learning).
IMPACT: Spanish is an important part of our curriculum at St. Ignatius’ and we feel that with the implementation of Language Angels, teachers feel confident and fully equipped to teach their units in KS2. Children are beginning to use what they have learnt in previous years to apply their knowledge as they progress up the school.
